Bicycle Accident Settlement
In March, cyclist Clifford Brown received a whopping $4.85 million settlement from the city of San Diego in a personal injury suit. This was one of the largest settlements a U.S. city has ever awarded to a cyclist. The accident was caused by an unattended riff in the sidewalk as a result of a tree stump falling on the pavement. This incident is said to be connected to the city’s cutbacks on maintenance and repair of sidewalks. After riding over the riff, Brown was launched 28 feet and suffered severe injuries including torn spinal cord ligaments. The city council voted unanimously (12-0) in favor of this settlement.
