Top 5 Most Dangerous Intersections in San Luis Obispo

Santa Rosa & Foothill | 82 accidents

At this intersection, the most common type of collision was rear end, and the second most common was broadside (where the side of one vehicle is impacted by the rear or front of another vehicle, forming a “T”). 39 people were injured, with 4 accidents involving a pedestrian and 3 accidents involving a bicyclist.

Los Osos Valley & Calle Joaquin | 76 accidents

Here, the most common type of collision was also rear end, and the second most common was  broadside. Out of the 8 people were injured, 1 was a pedestrian, and 3 were bicyclists.

California & Foothill | 48 accidents

Rear end was the most common type of collision at this intersection, with broadside collisions following closely behind. 53 people were injured, including 2 pedestrians and 4 bicyclists.

Los Osos Valley & Froom Ranch | 44 accidents

At this intersection, the most common type of collision was broadside, and the second most common type of collision was hit object. Here, 9 people were injured, and of that total, 1 was a pedestrian.

Santa Rosa & Olive | 42 accidents

Here, rear end was the most common type of collision: rear end, and sideswipe (when two vehicles are driving next to one another in the same direction and the sides of the two vehicles contact one another) was the second most common. 2 people were injured at this intersection.

Overall Most Dangerous Intersection

California & Foothill is the overall most dangerous intersection in the area, with a total of 53 injuries.

The intersections that are the most dangerous for bicyclists are Foothill & Broad and Foothill & Santa Rose with 6 bicycle accidents at each. The most dangerous intersection for pedestrians are Santa Rosa & Foothill with 3 pedestrian injured in 2 accidents.

Most Dangerous Intersections by Year

The number of accidents at Los Osos Valley & Calle Joaquin have continued to decrease over the past couple of years, with a steep drop of accidents in 2014.

2014 | Santa Rosa & Foothill: 19 Accidents

Accident Fatalities

Luckily, there have been only 4 fatalities that occurred in San Luis Obispo in the past 5 years, according to the data. Two pedestrians and two motorists were killed in 4 separate accidents. Surprisingly, all of these fatal accidents occurred on Northbound 101 On/Off ramps. There was one fatality at each of the 101 N on/off ramps at California, Higuera, Madonna, and Osos.
